The 5 Worst Foods for Diabetics

The worst foods for Diabetics have a common theme: Sugar. Whether as blood glucose spiking sweets, or heavy carbs which even the best insulin treatments have a hard time with.

Regular Soda.

A regular soda is about as good for a diabetic as an 8oz cup full of processed sugar. In fact it’s about as good for a regular person as that as well.

Dessert.

“You mean Strawberry Cheesecake isn’t good for diabetics?” You’re much better off avoiding foods with Sugar as the first ingredient.

How could such a delicious staple of American cuisine make it so high on this list? Because all those empty carbs and heavy cheese cause pizza to digest slowly, giving diabetics high blood sugar hours after eating it.

Chinese Food.

We’re willing to admit, there are some exceptions, but the majority of Chinese Food is loaded with sugary marinades and tons of greasy fried carbs in the rice. These combinations take forever to digest and will spike your blood sugar immediately. Rather than reaching for that double order of orange chicken, let your Chinese cravings dim sum.

Happy Hour.

Just know that sharing appetizers doesn’t mean you’re not eating it. A couple hours of chips, fried cheese/potatoes/onions or anything else an inventive chef can come up with and a few glasses/mugs of your favorite wine/beer will throw more than a wrench into your afternoon blood sugar. Happy Hour is sneaky, so keep your glucose monitor close.

Like everything else for Type-1 Diabetics, planning and moderation are the best way to keep your glucose levels in check. Test early and often, and adjust your insulin dosage as needed if you're going to splurge on any of these junk foods. The last thing you want to do is ruin your indulgence with a crummy blood glucose reading.
